Frequently Asked Questions About Trifocal Intraocular Lenses
Get the information you need to guide you to an informed decision about the cataract lens replacement that best fits your budget and your lifestyle.
A trifocal lens is a type of intraocular lens that is used to replace the natural lens of the eye during cataract surgery. Like a trifocal eyeglass lens, a trifocal lens contains three different prescriptions in one lens, allowing the patient to see clearly at far, intermediate, and near distances, reducing, or sometimes eliminating, the need for glasses or contacts.12,13
Trifocal lenses like Clareon® PanOptix® Pro are considered an advanced lens type. They carry an out-of-pocket cost not carried by basic monofocal intraocular lenses that provide only distance vision without glasses.22 As with any medical procedure, it is important to consult with an ophthalmologist to determine whether a trifocal lens is the right choice for your specific needs.
You have options when it comes to cataract surgery. Choosing the right lens for your needs is a personal decision that should be discussed with your eye surgeon. Generally, trifocal lenses are a good option for people who:
- Want to reduce their dependence on glasses: Trifocal lenses are designed to provide good vision at far, intermediate, and near distances, which can reduce the need for glasses or contacts, or even eliminate it altogether.12,13
- Have realistic expectations: While trifocal lenses can improve vision at multiple distances, they may not completely eliminate the need for glasses or contacts,12 and some patients may experience visual side effects such as halos or glare.12,23§§
- Are aware of payment options: Trifocal intraocular lenses typically carry an out-of-pocket cost, which may be a consideration for some patients. However, many clinics offer finance options or payment plans.
§§In response to QUVID questions: In the Past 7 Days, How Much Were You Bothered By Starbursts?; In the Past 7 Days, How Much Were You Bothered By Halos?; In the Past 7 Days, How Much Were You Bothered By Glare? AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® was tested. AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® and Clareon® PanOptix® are optically equivalent; n=127.
Typically, an insurance company will not cover elective parts of cataract surgery, including different types of lenses and laser-assisted cataract surgery. This means that, if you want a trifocal intraocular lens, you will pay out-of-pocket for at least part of the procedure. But if the possibility of reducing the dependence on glasses or being able to see clearly at all distances without glasses13 is important to you, the benefits may outweigh the cost. Ask your eye care provider about your options.
Both Clareon® PanOptix® and Clareon® PanOptix® Pro are trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) used during cataract surgery to replace the eye’s natural lens. These lenses are designed to help people see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances.12,13 PanOptix® Pro is the next generation of the PanOptix® lens, developed to build on the original PanOptix® design. Both lenses aim to reduce dependence on glasses after cataract surgery.12,13†#

#You may still need glasses for some tasks.
Many patients who receive PanOptix® lenses report little or no need for glasses. In clinical studies of PanOptix® lenses:
- More than 9 out of 10 patients reported never needing glasses at any distance.13,19¶
- 99% said they would choose the same lens again.12,19**
- 98% would recommend it to family or friends.12,19††
However, results vary, and some people may still need glasses for certain activities.

IMPORTANT PRODUCT INFORMATION:
CAUTION: Restricted by law to sale by or on the order of a physician.
DESCRIPTION: The Clareon® PanOptix® Pro Trifocal IOL is a type of multifocal IOL used to focus images clearly onto the back of your eye (retina) to allow clear vision after the cataract removal. In addition, the center of the Clareon® PanOptix® Pro Trifocal IOL allows for better near (reading) vision and intermediate (computer work) vision versus what a monofocal lens would provide. The Clareon® PanOptix® Pro Trifocal Toric IOLs are also designed to correct pre-existing corneal astigmatism, which is the inability of the eye to focus clearly at any distance because of difference curvatures on the cornea.
There is a chance that you still may need glasses for distance, intermediate, and/or near vision. You will get the full benefit of the Clareon® PanOptix® Pro Trifocal IOL when it is placed in both eyes. Please discuss with your eye doctor whether this is the right IOL for you.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS: Due to the design of multifocal IOLs, there are some side effects that can be associated with the Clareon® PanOptix® Pro Trifocal IOL models. These may be worse than with a monofocal IOL, including visual disturbances such as glare, rings around lights, starbursts (rays around light sources), and reduced contrast sensitivity (decrease in ability to distinguish objects from their background, especially in dim lighting). These side effects may make it more difficult to see while driving at night or completing tasks in low lighting conditions such as at night or in fog, or in a dimly lit room after surgery as compared to before surgery.
Further, a toric IOL corrects astigmatism only when it is placed in the correct position in the eye. There is a possibility that the toric IOL could be placed incorrectly or could move within the eye. If the toric lens is not positioned correctly following surgery, the change in your astigmatism correction by the IOL, along with any necessary correction with glasses, may cause visual distortions. If the lens rotates in your eye, you may need additional surgery to reposition or replace the IOL.
ATTENTION: As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. Prior to surgery, ask your eye doctor to provide you with the Patient Information Brochure for the proposed IOL to be implanted. This document will further inform you of the risks and benefits associated with this IOL. Discuss any questions about possible risks and benefits with your eye doctor, as well as your medical condition and any eye disease you may have.
