Today, the Optometric community is at a crossroads. We’re seeing the intersection of a powerful demographic shift, evolving digital-lifestyle needs, and market gaps. This presents a powerful opportunity with presbyopes. By 2035, there will be approximately 215 million potential and established presbyopes across the country.1 Most never get the option to appreciate the convenience of spectacle-free reading.
“Mastering and offering Multifocal contact lenses isn’t just smart eye care, it’s smart business.” – Dr. Resnick
To dive into why the Multifocal contact lens market is underserved and how we can change that, Dr. Carla Mack, Alcon’s Global and US Head of Professional Education and Development sat down with Dr. Susan Resnick and Dr. Pamela Lowe. Together, they shared insights on the changing needs of patients and how the industry is adapting to meet those needs head-on.
“Multifocal patients come from all walks of life,” Dr. Lowe explains. “They’re teachers, travelers, business leaders, and moms and dads stewarding the next generation. They’re all different, but they share one thing in common: they’re social media scrollers, text-senders, always attached to their digital devices—and they always want to see every moment clearly2,10 and comfortably.3,5-7”
To help patients over age 40 maximize how they use their eyes today, Multifocal contact lenses become increasingly important. “That’s why Alcon is bringing Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) together with a new online community—the MyAlcon Multifocal Hub,” said Dr. Mack. “It’s a place to help elevate how we care for and communicate with presbyopic patients.”
“I’ve always considered Alcon a thought leader in the Multifocal category. With the MyAlcon Multifocal Hub, they’re creating a go-to source for all things Multifocal.” – Dr. Lowe
As screens take over every waking hour, few things are more essential to presbyopes today than the ability to read at arms’ length. The new MyAlcon Multifocal Hub helps ECPs stay current on new Multifocal training, marketing resources and innovation in the category. It educates and inspires ECPs to more successfully fit Multifocal contact lenses to enhance the patient experience and practice performance.
“The beauty of the site is that it’s a peer-led resource, sharing best practices and strategies for more successful fits and Multifocal adoption.” – Dr. Resnick
Dr. Resnick added, “Multifocal fitting can feel daunting to many, especially if it’s not currently a core component of your practice. But Alcon is changing that with the tools, technology and resources now available.”
“The MyAlcon Multifocal Hub offers the essentials for Multifocal contact lens success,” Dr. Mack explained. “It starts with articles that share what’s driving clinical success from peers. It offers social media resources to inspire and connect with presbyopic patients online.”
Dr. Mack continued, “Educational assets include our easy 2-step fitting guide and a fitting hub to help simplify your contact lens recommendations. ECPs can also learn more about our Multifocal Masterclasses, which brings in-office training and education to your practice, helping to refine your multifocal fitting techniques with your own patients.”
Education and fitting resources play a critical role in building confidence with Multifocal fitting. As training evolves, so too does Alcon Multifocal contact lens technology.
Dr. Resnick explained, “As someone who fits Alcon Multifocal contact lenses, I know firsthand the impact advanced technology can have on fit success. When I fit Multifocal lenses from the Alcon TOTAL family, I know I can give my patients seamless vision near through far,2-4 with TOTAL comfort.”3,5-7
Dr. Lowe agreed, highlighting the value of the shared PRECISION PROFILE® lens design. “It's the same across all Alcon Multifocal contact lenses, for a predictable fitting process that reduces chair time and increases fitting success.”3,8-9**
“Having the WaterInnovations™ portfolio with DAILIES TOTAL1® and TOTAL30® Multifocal, and now the Multifocal Hub, means we have the resources to provide positive presbyopic patient outcomes.” – Dr. Resnick
