Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Standard LASIK (non- personalized)

This is the original form of LASIK, based on your glasses or contact lens prescription. It doesn’t account for higher-order aberrations—vision imperfections that are more complex than common issues like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism—or corneal irregularities.3

Alcon offers two standard LASIK procedures: Wavelight® Wavefront Optimized™ and Wavelight® Custom Q. Like other LASIK procedures, they use a laser beam to reshape the surface of the eye, making it effective at focusing light and treating nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.4 Wavelight® Custom Q procedure elevates Wavelight® Wavefront Optimized™ to the next level by incorporating the cornea’s natural curvature (Q factor) to deliver a precise treatment.4-6

PRK laser eye surgery

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a type of laser vision correction that reshapes the surface of the eye. Unlike some other procedures, it does not involve creating a corneal flap.7

There are two main ways to perform PRK, depending on how the thin surface layer of the cornea is removed8

  •  Alcohol-assisted PRK uses an alcohol solution to loosen the surface layer of your cornea, which is then lifted away before the laser treatment.

  •  Touch-free PRK removes the surface layer of your cornea directly with the laser, avoiding the use of alcohol.
Alcon Streamlight™ T-PRK is an advanced, touch-free PRK.9

  • This approach may be recommended based on factors such as thin corneas or playing contact sports.7

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the right vision correction procedure depends on your individual eye health, lifestyle, and vision goals. During a thorough eye exam, your doctor will evaluate the shape and thickness of your cornea, your prescription, and other important factors. They will then recommend the procedure best suited to your eyes—whether it’s LASIK, PRK, or another option.24

Patients with thin corneas or dry eyes may still be eligible for laser vision correction, but LASIK may not always be the best option. Procedures like PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) are often recommended because they do not involve creating a corneal flap, which can preserve more corneal tissue and reduce the risk of flap-related complications.7 Talk to your eye surgeon to discuss the right treatment option for you.

LASIK can be used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.24 There are several types of LASIK, and the most advanced ones, such as wavelight® plus, are highly personalized to the unique shape of your eyes.20

Most patients achieve 20/40 vision or better after LASIK or PRK, which is typically sufficient for most daily activities without glasses or contact lenses. However, some people may still need glasses for night driving or reading, especially as they get older and develop presbyopia—a normal age-related loss of near focusing ability.25,26 Check with your doctor for the latest LASIK technologies like wavelight® plus, which allows >98% of patients to achieve 20/20 vision or better,15 and addresses your individual optical imperfections to enhance your quality of vision.15,27†
