The Features That Matter Most
A 2006 survey of ophthalmologists found that endothelium protection is the most important factor in choosing an OVD.1 Protection is usually determined by an OVD’s:
- Resistance to shear stress during phacoemulsification
- Retention during phaco
- Ability to maintain space
- Molecular charge
These features are determined by the physiochemical features of cohesiveness, pseudoplasticity, and molecular charge.2

- - Breaks away in a single piece
The degree to which a substance adheres to itself. OVDs with higher cohesiveness are more likely to form a mass that:
OVDs with low cohesiveness3—known as "dispersives"—stay in the eye longer, providing better overall endothelial protection. VISCOAT® and DisCoVisc® OVDs are examples of dispersives.
- Molecular Charge
The tendency of a fluid to lose viscosity in the face of increasing shear stress. OVDs with high pseudoplasticity thin out in response to the forces generated during phacoemulsification.
OVDs with low pseudoplasticity—such as VISCOAT® and DisCoVisc® OVDs—tend to resist dilution during nucleus emulsification.
Whether a material has a positive, negative, or neutral charge. Intraocular tissue is positively charged, meaning that negatively charged particles are attracted to it.
Most OVDs contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which has one negative charge. Chondroitin Sulfate has two negative charges, giving OVDs with Chondroitin Sulfate and HA a triple negative charge. HPMC is actually neutral.
