Frequently Asked Questions About AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOLs

Click the questions below to find out more about AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs.

How do AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs work?

AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs work by combining apodized diffractive and refractive technologies to provide a range of vision.

What is the difference between AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® +2.5 D IOL and AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® +3.0 D IOL?

The apodized diffractive optical designs of the two lenses are slightly different. The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® +2.5 D IOL ACTIVEFOCUS optical design is intended to provide crisp distance vision and more. The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® +3.0 D IOL is designed to provide the broadest range of vision.*

*Broadest range of vision across all Alcon® IOLs approved in the United States.

How does pupil size affect near and distance vision with AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs?

In bright light, with constricted pupils, the lens sends light energy simultaneously to both near and distant focal points. In low light, with dilated pupils, the apodized diffractive lens sends a greater amount of energy to distance vision to minimize visual disturbances.

Do AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs work well for night vision?

In dim or dark lighting conditions, AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs demonstrate similar contrast sensitivity to the AcrySof® IQ Monofocal IOL. However, patients may require reading glasses or additional lighting for near visual activities, like reading a menu. The majority of patients reported minimal visual disturbances like glare and halos six months after surgery.1,2

Are there resources that can help me implement AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs into my practice?

Yes. Approaches for Implanting Multifocals contains valuable information on a range of topics, including training your staff, selecting patients, preparing them for their journey, implanting the lenses and much more.

Are biometric techniques for the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® family of IOLs different from those of monofocal lenses?

The differences between the biometry for the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® family of IOLs and the techniques used for other AcrySof® lenses are minimal. As with any IOL, accurate biometry is essential for overall success. It is important to target emmetropia, and to personalize your A-constants for all IOLs.

Is surgery with AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOLs covered by Medicare and other medical insurance?

Partially. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services offers Medicare beneficiaries the option of receiving presbyopia-correcting IOLs, such as AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® lenses. Under this policy, Medicare will continue existing reimbursement amounts for cataract surgery, and patients may elect to pay additional charges for advanced technology lenses, such as the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® family of IOLs. For more information about reimbursement, visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ website.

ACRYSOF® IQ RESTOR® FAMILY OF INTRAOCULAR LENSES IMPORTANT PRODUCT INFORMATION

CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this device to the sale by or on the order of a physician.

INDICATIONS: The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens (IOL) is intended for primary implantation for the visual correction of aphakia secondary to removal of a cataractous lens in adult patients with and without presbyopia, who desire near, intermediate and distance vision with increased spectacle independence. The lens is intended to be placed in the capsular bag.

WARNINGS/PRECAUTIONS: Careful preoperative evaluation and sound clinical judgment should be used by the surgeon to decide the risk/benefit ratio before implanting a lens in a patient with any of the conditions described in the Directions for Use labeling. Physicians should target emmetropia, and ensure that IOL centration is achieved. Care should be taken to remove viscoelastic from the eye at the close of surgery.

Some patients may experience visual disturbances and/or discomfort due to multifocality, especially under dim light conditions. As with other multifocal IOLs, visual symptoms may be significant enough that the patient will request explant of the multifocal IOL. Spectacle independence rates vary with all multifocal IOLs; as such, some patients may need glasses when reading small print or looking at small objects.

Clinical studies with the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens indicated that posterior capsule opacification (PCO), when present, developed earlier into clinically significant PCO. Prior to surgery, physicians should provide prospective patients with a copy of the Patient Information Brochure available from Alcon for this product informing them of possible risks and benefits associated with the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOLs.

Studies have shown that color vision discrimination is not adversely affected in individuals with the AcrySof® Natural IOL and normal color vision. The effect on vision of the AcrySof® Natural IOL in subjects with hereditary color vision defects and acquired color vision defects secondary to ocular disease (e.g., glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, chronic uveitis, and other retinal or optic nerve diseases) has not been studied. Do not resterilize; do not store over 45° C; use only sterile irrigating solutions such as BSS® or BSS PLUS® Sterile Intraocular Irrigating Solutions.

ATTENTION: Reference the Directions for Use labeling for a complete listing of indications, warnings and precautions.
