Photostress recovery

Data that is consistent with improvements in functional vision under glare (that may also improve safety under low-visibility conditions) have shown that providing blue light filtration to pseudophakes with UV-absorbing-only IOLs showed faster photostress recovery and reduced glare disability results.†,5

  • In this prospective, assessor-masked study that was conducted at five clinics in the US, eligible candidates were at least 12 months postimplantation of a control IOL and a contralateral IOL that filtered blue light.

  • Glare disability was defined as the intensity of a white-light annulus that obscured a subject's ability to see a central target. Heterochromatic contrast thresholds were defined as the intensity of a blue-light disk that obscured a central target.

  • Photostress recovery time was the duration required to regain sight of the target after a five-second flash of annulus light.

  • Patients with a blue light-filtering AcrySof® Natural SN60AT IOL (study group) and patients with an AcrySof® SA60AT IOL with no blue light filter (control group) who had good visual acuity and a valid driver’s license performed left-turn maneuvers in a driving simulator in front of oncoming traffic. The safety margin (time to collision minus time taken to turn at intersection with oncoming traffic) was calculated. The measurements were repeated with a glare source simulating low-angle sun conditions (daytime driving).

Glare disability

Under simulated glare and simulated driving conditions in two studies with glare, the blue light filtering of the AcrySof® IQ Monofocal IOL contributed to:

  • Significantly reduced glare disability3
  • Significantly higher tolerance to disabling glare3
  • Significantly improved driving conditions under daytime glare4
  • Significantly greater safety margin and fewer collisions4

Providing blue light filtration to pseudophakes with UV-only IOLs was shown to increase the glare disability threshold by 8 percent (0.12 log).5 In this study, this meant patients with blue light filtration underwent increased tolerance to more light before experiencing disabling glare.

ACRYSOF® SINGLE-PIECE MONOFOCAL INTRAOCULAR LENSES IMPORTANT PRODUCT INFORMATION

CAUTION: Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician.

INDICATIONS: AcrySof® single-piece monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) include the AcrySof® IQ Aspheric Natural IOL (Model SN60WF), AcrySof® UV-Absorbing Aspheric IOL (Model SA60WF), AcrySof® Natural IOL (Model SN60AT) and AcrySof® IOL (Model SA60AT). Each IOL is indicated for visual correction of aphakia in adult patients following cataract surgery. These IOLs are intended for replacement in the capsular bag.

WARNINGS/PRECAUTIONS: Careful preoperative evaluation and sound clinical judgment should be used by the surgeon to decide the risk/benefit ratio before implanting an IOL in a patient with any of the conditions described in the Directions for Use that accompany each IOL. Caution should be used prior to lens encapsulation to avoid lens decentration or dislocation. Viscoelastic should be removed from the eye at the close of surgery.

Studies have shown that color vision discrimination is not adversely affected in individuals with the AcrySof® Natural IOL (Model SN60AT) and normal color vision. The effect on vision of the AcrySof® Natural IOL in subjects with hereditary color vision defects and acquired color vision defects secondary to ocular disease (e.g. glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, chronic uveitis, and other retinal or optic nerve diseases) has not been studied.

Do not resterilize. Do not store at temperatures over 45° C. Use only sterile irrigating solutions to rinse or soak IOLs.
