Polymegethism

Polymegethism

Symptoms

  • None

Signs

  • Variation in cell size and cell shape (pleomorphism) of the endothelium; seen with high magnification (40x) in the endothelial specular reflection

Etiology

  • Thought to result from chronic hypoxia causing corneal acidosis following wear of lens with a low Dk/t
  • Common in long-term wearers, especially of PMMA and low Dk/t hydrogel lenses

Prevalence

  • Rare with modern materials

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Refit with a lens of high Dk/t (SiHy), or change to DW / reduce wearing time
