Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

Limbal engorgement, limbal redness

Symptoms

  • Smeary vision
  • Dryness
  • Lens intolerance

Signs

  • Yellow, buttery expression from meibomian glands in severe cases
  • Tear meniscus frothing
  • Decreased or no secretion from meibomian glands
  • Poorly wetting lens(es)

Etiology

  • Blocked meibomian glands due to abnormal meibomian oils
  • Ductal epidermis turnover increased

Prevalence

  • Common

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Lid therapy. For example, hygiene, heat and gentle massage twice daily
  • Mechanical expression
  • Omega-3 supplements may help
  • Surfactant lens cleaning
  • May consider switching to daily disposables to prevent lens contamination with meibomian oils
