Deposits – Inorganic

Inorganic film

Symptoms

  • Patient may notice spots on lens
  • Discomfort, reduced vision

Signs

  • Accumulation of inorganic material on soft lens surface
  • Visible film or focal spots on lens with dark field illumination

Etiology

  • More common in FDA Group II hydrogels and may be from poor tear film quality, or disinfection procedure
  • Environmental contaminants, i.e. rust spots from metallic debris

Prevalence

  • Infrequent

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Replace lens if necessary
  • Change lens material
  • Review rub and rinse routine
  • Switch to solution with surfactant
  • Attempt to identify source of contamination
  • Consider switching to DD lenses
