Incomplete blinking

Blinking - Incomplete

Lagophthalmos

Symptoms

  • None to classic symptoms of dryness and discomfort

Signs

  • Incomplete wetting across a region of the lens
  • Lids fail to close completely on blinking
  • Lens surface deposition may be present
  • Corneal epithelial fluorescein staining may be present, typically in the inferior portion of the cornea

Etiology

  • Failure to completely close eyes during blink
  • Presence of contact lens may inhibit the blink reflex
  • Interpalpebral region of lens becomes dry and may deposit

Prevalence

  • Common

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Blinking training
  • Rewetting drops
  • More frequent lens replacement may be necessary
