Epithelial Edema

Sattler’s veil, microcystic edema

Symptoms

  • Colored haloes around lights
  • Photophobia
  • Can have debilitating effect on vision

Signs

  • Hazy cornea, when viewed with sclerotic scatter or retro illumination

Etiology

  • Extracellular edema around basal epithelial cells
  • Occurs with exposure to hypotonic solutions, reflex tearing, or during adaptation to low oxygen transmissibility lenses
  • Can also occur with chronic stromal edema

Prevalence

  • Rare

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Increase oxygen permeability of soft or rigid lenses
