Corneal Erosion

Symptoms

  • May be asymptomatic
  • Deeper erosions will result in discomfort, pain, photophobia, and/or foreign body sensation

Signs

  • Patch or area of coalesced sodium fluorescein staining
  • Generally irregular shape

Etiology

  • May occur as a result of binding of lenses (often during EW)

Prevalence

  • Occasional

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Cease lens wear for at least 24 hours or longer if a full epithelial thickness erosion
  • Reduce wearing time if EW
  • Consider lower modulus material
  • Consider topical prophylactic antibiotic
  • Rewetting drops
