Lens Tear

Nick, torn lens

Symptoms

  • None to severe discomfort during wear, which dissipates quickly on lens removal

Signs

  • Local corneal staining often occurs in the region of the cornea near the tear
  • The tear may or may not be obvious under magnification

Etiology

  • Poor handling
  • Catching the lens in the lens case

Prevalence

  • Common; may be higher with new wearers and in thin lenses, especially those that are high water content

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Lens replacement
  • Re-evaluation of lens handling
  • Change to daily disposable lenses if occurs continually
