Contact Lenses: Problems and Defects

Defect

Symptoms

  • None to severe discomfort during wear, which dissipates quickly on lens removal

Signs

  • Local staining often occurs in the region of the cornea and conjunctiva near the defect
  • The defect may or may not be obvious under magnification

Etiology

  • Poor manufacturing techniques (rare)
  • Damage during use (poor lens handling, lens trapped in case, etc)

Prevalence

  • Common; may be higher with new wearers and in thin lenses, especially those that are high water content

Differential Diagnosis

Management

  • Lens replacement
  • Re-evaluation of lens handling
  • Change to daily disposable lenses if occurs continually
